The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider, unveiled to the world during the 2018 edition of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance®, is the 50th open car model produced by the Maranello-based company. Like the coupé version, this car is not just a special series: indeed, the 488 Pista Spider is the highest performing eight-cylinder open-top model ever made by Ferrari.
Just like the 488 Pista, the 488 Pista Spider is closely derived from the racing model: its engine, aerodynamics and dynamics are the result of the skills developed by Ferrari over the years of activity on tracks around the world.
Developed from the 488 Challenge, in the Prancing Horse’s single-make series, and the 488 GTE, which won the GT class of the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2017, the 488 Pista Spider is for any Ferrari driver looking for exceptional performance in open-top driving, cradled by the sound of the Ferrari V8 turbo, a real benchmark not only for engines with this architecture, but also for aspirated ones. It was also the winner of the “International Engine of the Year” award from 2016 to 2018 and named “Best of the Best” as the best engine among all the winners of the last 20 years.
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider is equipped with the most powerful turbocharged engine ever mounted on a road car. The 3902 cm3 cylinder V8 can unleash a maximum power of 720 hp at 8000 rpm, 50 hp more than the 488 Spider and 115 hp more than the previous special version, for a specific power output of 185 hp/l. Maximum torque peaks at 770 Nm and is available from 3,000 rpm. The Ferrari 488 Pista accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.85 seconds and has a top speed of 340 km/h.
The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider can boast performance comparable to a racing car. This is possible thanks to the exceptional aerodynamic research carried out by the engineers at Maranello, who spared no resources in developing highly innovative solutions. The exceptional aerodynamic efficiency of the 488 Spider has thus been improved by 20% on the 488 Pista Spider, with major benefits in terms of absolute speed and lap times on medium-fast tracks as well as sheer fun behind the wheel.
In a car so strongly derived from the racing world as the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider, the interior could only be a triumph of essentiality. Carbon and Alcantara dominate the cockpit, combining perfectly with the refinement typical of Prancing Horse cars, seen in details such as hand stitching in contrasting colours, tread plates and heel rests in triangular pattern aluminium and the sculpted door panels.
To ensure an unparalleled and genuinely immersive driving experience, the dynamics of the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider have been developed to achieve a seamless possible combination of acceleration, braking efficiency, steering precision, grip, stability and handling. To achieve this, a new control system, the Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE), has been developed, which makes controlling the lateral dynamics in high performance situations more predictable, intuitive, and controllable, making driving to the limit easier even for less experienced drivers.
